Looking for a subject matter that is both easy and fascinating? Geometrical shapes may be the perfect choice for beginner artists. They are all about shapes, forms, and shadows - skills that are essential to learn at the beginning of your painting journey.

Don't let their simplicity fool you, though. Geometric patterns can be incredibly beautiful and interesting. They can also be used in modern painting techniques that involve layers and varying color combinations, adding depth and dimension to your artwork.

And here's a pro tip: use a ruler to get those straight edges just right!

Abstract Paintings

Abstract artwork is fast becoming an area that artists adore. Whilst this is an utterly different painting technique, it is easy to follow. The supplies will differ slightly from that of basic acrylic painting.

Different mediums will be required, including heavy body paint, pouring medium and varnish. Acrylic pouring is an unusual but widely used art for utilizing the vibrant colors associated with acrylic paint.

You can also use different painting surfaces, not only the traditional stretched canvas but also wood, and ceramic tiles. You just have to ensure that the surface you are using is primed with gesso before use so that the paint does not get absorbed into the canvas and lose its strong color.

Acrylic pouring does provide an artist with greater freedom to create the art that they feel more passionate about. There are no exact rules or specific techniques you have to follow. You have complete control of your painting.

You do not have to paint a specific object or create a landscape, it can be splashes of colors forming a unique painting with different effects.

Whilst this is not a quick-drying technique, the result is well worth the wait!

The main thing you have to ensure is the perfect consistency of the paint mixture. To thin, then the paint will just run off the canvas. Too thick and it will not spread across the canvas and you will not have a smooth, sleek result.

Tip: Consistency is key to creating the perfect mixture. You have to learn the correct technique if you do venture down the path of acrylic pouring.

Ocean Themed Paintings

Gazing out into the vast expanse of the ocean, one can't help but feel the calming embrace of the waves. Painting the ocean is a beautiful way to capture the movement and emotion of the sea. It's no wonder that simple ocean paintings have become a beloved subject matter for artists of all skill levels.

Whether it's the vibrant blues of a tropical sea or the moody grays of a stormy day, there's no shortage of inspiration to be found in the ocean. With acrylics, you can easily capture the subtle nuances of the waves, the foam, and the sea spray.

Not only are ocean paintings aesthetically pleasing, but they also have a therapeutic effect on the artist. The process of painting can be incredibly meditative and soothing, providing a sense of peace and relaxation.

So why not try your hand at creating your own simple ocean painting? With the right materials and techniques, you can bring the beauty and tranquility of the sea to life on your canvas. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, you'll find that painting the ocean is a truly rewarding experience.

Characteristics of Acrylic Paints

When choosing a medium to work with, it is always best to understand the history and characteristics of that medium before you begin painting. This is so that you have the best chance of creating awe-inspiring artwork and limiting the chance of failure.

The Different Grades of Acrylic Paint

As an aspiring artist, it's crucial to understand that not all acrylic paints are created equal. There are two main types of acrylic paints available in the market, namely student-grade and professional-grade.

Student-grade acrylic paint is the more affordable option of the two, which makes it an attractive choice for beginners or those on a tight budget. However, this paint is less pigmented, and instead, it contains more fillers, making it less vibrant than its professional-grade counterpart. While it is an excellent option for experimenting with new painting techniques or for painting practice, the results may not be as bold or long-lasting as with professional-grade acrylic paints.

On the other hand, professional-grade acrylic paints are made with high-quality pigments, which provides rich and vibrant colors that can withstand the test of time. This type of paint offers excellent color saturation and coverage, which is perfect for creating detailed and layered artwork.

When deciding which type of acrylic paint to use, it ultimately comes down to your personal preference and budget. If you are just starting and experimenting with acrylics, the student-grade paint may be the right choice for you. However, if you're looking to create professional and high-quality artwork, investing in professional-grade acrylic paints will give you the best results.

Don't let the price tag discourage you from trying professional-grade paints, as their high pigmentation means that you'll need less paint to achieve the desired results, making them a great investment in the long run. So, whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, choose the right grade of acrylic paint to suit your unique style and elevate your artwork to the next level.

Uses For Acrylic Paint For Beginners

Acrylic paint is a versatile medium that can be used in many ways. It is easy to use, dries quickly and offers a variety of options for creating different effects. There are no limits when it comes to using acrylic paints for different purposes! Below are some ideas for beginners who want to learn how to paint with acrylics.

Paint your favorite animal or pet in the style of your favorite artist. You can also create abstract art inspired by nature by using abstract shapes and lines.

Design your very own custom signs and graphics on walls, doors or other surfaces at home or work with stencils, stamps or templates found at crafts stores. If you don't like how something looks on paper then try again until you get what you envisioned because practice makes perfect! Don't forget about canvases either. There's nothing quite like an original piece hanging up proudly on display.

Another idea is to use different materials to paint instead of standard paint brushes when creating artwork outdoors because they won't get ruined from being exposed directly to sunlight over time. You could also try using metal objects such as spoons; disposable chopsticks or bamboo sticks instead. Just remember not to use anything made out of plastic material since these materials may melt due to heat exposure which could ultimately cause damage depending on the conditions outside where painting occurs.

Selecting A Painting Surface

The surface of your canvas will influence the way you paint, so it's important to choose wisely. Here are a few options:

Canvas

Canvases are probably the most common choice for beginners because it's easy to transport and store, but it also comes in many different types and weights. A heavier canvas can be sturdier, but this can make painting more difficult if you're used to working on something lighter.

Wooden Panels

These are often made from pure wood and have a smooth finish that makes them perfect for acrylics since they don't absorb the paint as much as other surfaces do. They come in various thicknesses and sizes, so you'll want to look at what style appeals most to you before making your purchase!

Wooden Boards

These boards don't come with an already-attached frame like some canvases do; instead, there's just a piece of wood attached at one end (the top or bottom) with staples holding everything together while still allowing room for expansion when using acrylics! You'll need some tools before getting started though, so make sure those tools are handy when starting out painting on these surfaces because otherwise, things might get messy fast! However, once they're finished those frames look great!

Material Size

Choosing the right canvas size can make all the difference in the success of your painting. Not only does it affect the overall look and feel of your artwork, but it can also impact the practicality of where you can display it.

When selecting a canvas size, consider your personal style and the space you plan to hang or display your artwork in. Small canvases can be great for creating small, intimate pieces or for filling in smaller spaces on your walls. On the other hand, larger canvases are perfect for creating grandiose paintings with more detail and complexity.

Keep in mind that bigger canvases require more space, so make sure to measure the area where you plan to display your masterpiece. Additionally, the size of your canvas can also affect your painting process. A larger canvas can allow for more freedom of expression and larger brushstrokes, while smaller canvases can be great for more intricate details and precision.

Canvas sizes are measured by their width in inches, so it's important to consider the dimensions that will work best for your project. Whether you're creating a small abstract piece to hang in your hallway or a large expressive painting for your living room, choosing the right canvas size can help you achieve your desired outcome.

Surface Texture

Use a textured surface. You can create texture on your canvas with the help of the canvas itself, or you can use a textured brush (or even paintbrush) to lay down strokes of paint in a variety of directions. This creates texture and helps prevent your work from looking too flat.

Use a textured medium. While some paints do come in textured formulas, sometimes you'll also want to add an acrylic gel medium over the top of smooth gesso to give it some nice dimensionality.

If you're feeling adventurous, try using sponges for some interesting effects on wet or dry paper surfaces; these are fun for kids too!

Color

Color is one of the most important aspects of any painting. It can make or break a piece, so you'll want to choose carefully. The way you use color will determine the mood and feeling of your work, and this is true no matter what style you're using.

Color can be used to set a mood, such as in an outdoor scene with many shades of green and blue that makes it seem like it's always overcast outside. Color can represent an emotion or feeling, such as how red represents passion (or anger).

You can also use color to represent a mood or feeling in your painting: for example, some paintings might have very bright colors; this would mean they're happy artworks!

Paints

This is the most obvious one. You need paints! It's best to use acrylic paint, as it dries faster than oil and doesn't yellow over time. There are lots of different brands to choose from; so don't be afraid to experiment!

Palette

Your palette should be made of a non-porous surface, such as glass or plastic (never wood). The color you put down will stay more vibrant if you start with a clean palette each time. Keep in mind that some palettes come with multiple wells for mixing colours together, which can make your painting process easier if you're trying something new or want more control over how the paint looks on canvas.

Canvas/Wooden Panel

These are the two main types of surfaces used in acrylic painting; they both have benefits and drawbacks depending on who's using them and why they're using them! Canvas tends not to wrinkle as a wooden panel would over time due to its flexible nature but it also has less texture on its own without additional materials added during prep work before painting starts (such as sanding).

Wooden panels tend not only towards having bigger textures naturally thanks to their hardwood construction but also require less prep work because there isn't much need for sanding before starting off new projects. Just be sure about what type works best for each person individually based on preferences alone because ultimately all mediums have pros and cons when used regularly enough times by artists who practice frequently.

Acrylic Colors: Which To Choose

When it comes to colors, you have a lot of options:

  • Choose a palette of colors that you like.

  • Choose colors that will work well together.

  • Choose complementary colors.

  • Choose colors that are analogous (colors next to each other on the color wheel).

  • Choose monochromatic colors (colors with the same hue and value but different saturation levels).

For example, if I wanted to create an autumnal painting from my own garden, I might choose these four acrylic paint colors: Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Alizarin Crimson and Rose Madder Red Hue—all complementary shades, meaning that they're located across from each other on the color wheel.

Starting Your Painting Project

  1. Choose a subject.

  2. Prepare the canvas for painting.

  3. Set up your palette.

  4. Choose your paints, brushes and canvas.

After You Finish Painting: Next Steps

Once you're done painting, there are a few steps to take to make sure your acrylics will last as long as possible. First and foremost, use a lint-free cloth (like those used for cleaning eyeglasses) to wipe the surface of your painting while it is still wet. This will remove any dust or other particles that may have gotten on the painting while you were working with it. Next, let the painting dry for at least 24 hours before adding any additional coats of paint or varnish; this will prevent any smudges or other unwanted marks from appearing in your work later on!

If you want to display your acrylics without worrying about dust getting trapped between layers of paint, then I recommend using an acid-free mounting board when framing each piece so that air can circulate freely around both sides without leaving unsightly marks behind over time.
